Why 'Tilia Services'?
Business titles take all shapes and sizes, moving from the straightforward name of the individual involved in setting the business, through to anagrams or letters in new and exotic combinations. When I started my freelance career, I wanted a name that was not 'ego-driven' and also provided a subtle clue to potential clients that my work linked to the natural world and designed landscapes as well. The ethos behind Tilia Services is uncomplicated but diverse. Tilia is a highly versatile genus of trees. Known as Linden throughout northern Europe, lime trees are used widely, grow in most soil types and locations as:-
- Parkland and street trees, frequently in large avenues
- In amenity planting
- Pleached walkways
- Ornamental planting
- Significant woodland trees, especially in ancient woodland.
Lime wood is used widely in turning and for carving in fine detail. Many Baltic countries have Linden as their national tree, and in Sweden it was the family name of Carl Linnaeus who is still an inspiration over three hundred years after his birth.
A tall venerable lime tree grew outside my bedroom window as a child. I watched and loved it through all seasons and weathers.
